A welcoming way to learn and play
American Mahjong is a four-player tile game that blends pattern recognition, strategy, conversation, and good humor. NY Mahjong events are designed so newcomers can learn the rhythm of play while experienced players enjoy organized social games.
How a typical social-club session works
- Reserve a place. Register for an event and share your current experience level.
- Check in and meet your table. Hosts match players by level and honor seating requests when possible.
- Set up the table. Most games use four players, racks, dice, a complete American Mahjong set, and the current card used by the group.
- Play several rounds. Players build hands, exchange tiles during the Charleston when applicable, and rotate or regroup as the event format permits.
- Learn together. Questions are welcome. Courtesy, patience, and clear communication matter more than speed.
Preparing for your first event
Review the event listing to see whether sets, cards, or other materials are supplied. Arrive a few minutes early, tell the host your level honestly, and ask for help whenever you need it.
